What is sex therapy?
Sex therapy is a form of talk therapy that focuses on concerns related to sex, intimacy, and sexuality. It’s non-touch and fully clothed just like any other counselling session.
In sex therapy, we might explore things like sexual dysfunction, sexual pain, desire differences, or questions around sexual identity. It’s a space where you can bring your concerns without shame or judgment. Sessions can be done individually or with a partner(s), depending on what feels most supportive for you.
What issues can sex therapy help with?
Sex therapy can help with a wide range of concerns, including low or mismatched desire, difficulty with arousal or orgasm, pain during sex, sexual anxiety, body image struggles, and the impact of trauma on intimacy. It can also support people exploring sexual identity, navigating changes in sexuality over time, or wanting to feel more confident and connected in their sexual relationships. You don’t need a specific “label” for your concern – if sex feels stressful or confusing, sex therapy can help.
What should I expect during a sex therapy session?
Sex therapy sessions take place in a respectful, non-judgmental space where you can talk openly about your concerns. Your therapist will listen, offer insight, and provide education or tools tailored to your unique needs. Sometimes you may be given exercises to try between sessions, but everything moves at your pace.
We understand that healing looks different for everyone, so our approach is always gentle, collaborative, and rooted in compassion. Each session is focused on helping you gain clarity, build self-understanding, and feel more empowered in your relationship to sex and self.
Is sex therapy inclusive of LGBTQ2S+ clients?
Absolutely! At Cair Sex Therapy, I offer affirming sex therapy to LGBTQ+ clients. I work from a sex-positive, anti-oppressive lens that honours diverse identities, bodies, and relationship structures. My goal is to support you in feeling seen, respected, and affirmed.
Do you offer virtual or in-person counselling?
Yes! I offer both in-person counselling in Vancouver, BC, and virtual sessions for clients who prefer to connect online. You’re welcome to choose what feels most accessible and comfortable for you.
Is counselling covered by my extended health benefits?
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, my services are accepted by most extended health benefit plans. Please check with your provider to confirm your coverage. Please note that clients pay for sessions upfront. After each session, I’ll provide an official receipt that you can submit for reimbursement.
Do you treat non-sexuality concerns?
Yes! Besides sex therapy, I also support issues like anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, and challenges specific to BIPOC clients and queer clients.
Do you work with queer and non-traditional relationships?
At Cair Sex Therapy, I work with a lot with LGBTQ2S+ clients, and non-traditional relationships such as non-monogamous relationships. My approach is affirming, sex-positive, and grounded in respect for diverse identities, bodies, and relationship structures. Therapy is a space where your relationship is met with respect! My role is to support you in navigating communication, connection, and intimacy in ways that feel authentic and aligned with your values.
Can couples therapy help improve intimacy and sex?
Yes, couples therapy can help with sexual intimacy. Emotional intimacy, communication, and sexual connection are deeply linked. Couples therapy can help partners explore how stress, conflict, trauma, or life changes are impacting their sexual relationship. When appropriate, we can gently integrate conversations about desire, boundaries, and pleasure in a way that feels supportive and respectful to both partners.
Will I have to talk about explicit details in therapy?
Only if you want to. You are always in control of what you share and how much detail feels comfortable. Sex therapy is guided by consent, pacing, and respect. Some people prefer to speak generally, while others find it helpful to be more specific. There’s no right or wrong way. My role is to meet you where you are and make sure therapy feels safe and non-judgmental.
Can couples therapy help after infidelity or betrayal?
Yes, it can! Couples therapy can support partners who are navigating the impact of infidelity or other forms of betrayal. This work is approached carefully and at a pace that feels manageable for both people. Therapy can help create space for accountability, emotional processing, and honest conversations, while also exploring whether and how trust can be rebuilt. Healing after betrayal looks different for every couple, and therapy offers a structured, supportive environment to navigate those difficult questions together.
Are counselling sessions confidential?
Yes, everything you share in counselling is kept completely confidential except in a few important situations:
- If there’s a serious or immediate risk of harm to yourself or others.
- If a child or vulnerable adult is believed to be at risk of abuse.
- If a court subpoena requires disclosure.
Can sex therapy help with mismatched desire in relationships?
Mismatched desire is one of the most common reasons people seek sex therapy, and it doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with either partner. Desire can be shaped by stress, trauma, life transitions, mental health, and how safe or connected we feel in our relationships. Sex therapy helps couples and individuals understand desire more compassionately, improve communication, and explore ways of reconnecting that feel respectful and sustainable for everyone involved.
Is sex therapy appropriate if I’m single?
Yes! Sex therapy isn’t only for people in relationships. Many individuals come to sex therapy while single to explore their relationship with desire, pleasure, body image, identity, or past experiences. Therapy can be a meaningful space to understand patterns, heal from past relationships or trauma, and build a more compassionate and confident relationship with yourself. You don’t need a partner to benefit from sex therapy.
How long does sex therapy usually last?
It really depends on your unique needs and goals. Some people notice positive changes after just a few sessions, while others find ongoing support helpful over several months or longer.
